Abstract

In the last few years, computer technology has profoundly changed how many faculty teach and how they keep academic records. Because these changes affect how the university operates, rather than what is taught in classes, they have escaped formulation as policy issues for faculty discussion. Instead, it has more often been the case that administrators have felt compelled “to fit the university to the demands of technology” made by commercial software vendors (Cornford 111). The consequences are profound for both the institution of the university and for the historic role of faculty.
