Abstract

In the past, many national union affiliates assumed that successful organizing drives were simply not possible among adjuncts or graduate employees. The past fifteen years have belied that assumption, with victories from one coast to the other showing that contingent academic labor can be organized. Without a clear plan for long-term success, however, contingent academic labor unions cannot fulfill their promise as a first line of defense against exploitative practices.
